People Before Profits

March 20, 2017

Revelations from employees of Canada’s biggest banks up-selling services to drive profit is playing across news outlets across the country. The CBC has reported receiving more than 1,500 emails from big bank employees describing the high-pressure tactics they have been told to use to convince consumers to take on greater debt. The employees describe feeling "pressured to lie and cheat customers" to sell products or to push “credit cards, overdraft or account types just because of these pressures."

Better Than Banks

  • As co-operatives, credit unions are owned by their members, which means that the interests of the customer and the shareholder are always aligned. There is not the pressure of quarterly profits to drive results.
  • All financial services customers expect and deserve excellent, reliable financial services at a good rate. Concerns regarding Canada’s biggest banks upselling, are unsettling.
  • All financial institutions are driven by the need to be profitable, but with credit unions, it’s not the ultimate motive; meeting the needs of our members and community always comes first. This is evidenced by over a decade of recognition by Canadians for customer service excellence that is better than the banks and high satisfaction from small business owners.
  • Canadian credit unions and caisses populaires operate on a business model that enables an organization to be profitable, but not at the expense of its employees or customers.
  • These recent allegations highlight the need for greater competition in the financial sector.
