World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

May 27, 2016

on June 15, we helped raise awareness of elder abuse by wearing purple ribbons and providing FREE coffee and goodies at the branches.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is marked each year on June 15 as an official United Nations International Day acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. According to the Department of Justice Canada, in 2009, seven per cent of seniors have reported some form of emotional or financial abuse and the overall rate of police-reported violence against seniors has increased 20 per cent since 1998. Research indicates that public education campaigns like WEAAD are vital for informing people about this issue.
