The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is seeing an increase in job opportunity frauds. According to victim reports, fraudsters are contacting victims through social media after they shared their resume on job recruitment websites.
Job scam
Scammers ask you to deposit a counterfeit cheque, wire transfer, or e-Transfer and then ask you to transfer funds elsewhere via e-Transfer, wire transfer, bitcoin ATM machine, or crypto accounts/wallets. They may also ask you to purchase gift cards.
Merchandise Scam
Scammers create fake ads online, take payment for purchases, and never send you the merchandise. They may also purchase an item from you with a counterfeit cheque that is more than the asking price. They will ask you to deposit the funds and wire or e-Transfer the excess funds immediately back to them.
Be aware if:
- Your employer asks you to receive fund into your personal bank account and forward the money elsewhere. Dont!
- You receive payment via cheque for more than what you asked for.
- You receive unsolicited job offers after posting your resume online.
- You are asked to pay fees in advance of receiving goods, services, or a prize.
- The job advertisement sounds too good to be true.
What to do if you are victim of the Fraud?
- Stay calm and gather all information about the fraud.
- Contact your financial institution(s) to report the incident.

- Notify the website where the fraud took place.
